Matanuska Glacier

Spectacular views today on ice!  But the day started with a huge scare.  Just outside of Anchorage on State Route 1, a Moose decided to make an appearance.  It headed straight for our rented Toyota Camry.  I put the brakes on quickly.  So fast that ice came flying out of the cooler.  No collision, which we would have lost.  Only a moose.  Not moose and squirrel.  However, on the way to Denali tomorrow we are driving through Wasilla.  According to one resident you can see Russia from the porches.  If not moose and squirrel maybe Boris and Natsha.

We used a guide named Pete from MICA tours.  Not sure how far we walked, but we were on the glacier at least 4 hours in our crampons.  Glaciers from a distance look like this:

Looks like plenty of white!  But up close they are far more varied in color, texture and topography.

According to our guide lakes like this form and deform constantly.  This lake wasn't always here.

It was strenuous.  Mostly on 65 year old joints.  I am sure we will sleep well tonight.

  1. Wow! Scary about the Moose, but very funny about the Moose and the squirrel. Photos are great! I'm so impressed, helmets and everything...

  2. We pulled off the road in order to get rid of the ice cubes that were around us. He moved quickly. Not a gallop, but a deliberate trot. He was enormous. At least 8 foot tall and we would have a picture if we weren't busy trying to keep from hitting him. Incidentally, about a half mile later there were signs that moose do cross the highway. This one did not cross in the "designated zone."
